Introducing the Poppin Puffins Mobile Game

Why we’re developing a game

Our goal at Poppin Puffins is to grow our Colony, add value to our project, and bring joy to our community through fun and playfulness. We believe one of the best ways to achieve these goals is through the development of a great mobile game.

The games we enjoyed growing up have played a big role in our lives, from creating friendships to shaping career paths. Sadly, many of those games have faded away or become unplayable due to the extinction of software updates like Flash Player (R.I.P.)

We want to revive those beloved nostalgic games with a fresh spin using our Poppin’ art and graffiti style, while bringing gameplay into the metaverse through web3 integrations that connect with NFTs and crypto wallets.

We have two games in development with one ultimate objective.

1. Poppin Puffins Mobile Game

Our mobile game will serve as a key marketing tool to reach, introduce, and onboard a global audience to Poppin Puffins and the Algorand ecosystem.

Our game aims to be so engaging and artistic that it will attract even those with no prior knowledge about crypto or NFTs. When they open the app, they will have the option to play for free and unlock features when they create an Algorand wallet or buy a Puffin NFT. Holding a Puffin NFT will come with other unique benefits like level unlock, XP boost, and earning governance tokens through P2E.

Our approach is unique because we are building a game that is marketed to new users as entertainment while delivering tangible benefits to current holders.

2. Web 3 Game:

We will develop Poppin Puffin Island (Final Name TBD), a web3-based game where players can chat, play nostalgic mini-games, design burrow homes, read comics, and experience the Poppin Puffin world.

In the end, the mobile and web3 games will unite. The mini-games playable in our mobile app will also be the mini-games in each Puffin Colony on Puffin Island.

Longer-term, we want to integrate other Algorand NFT projects and allow their holders to attain benefits, link, and play as their NFT.

Steps in development

We know this is a very ambitious goal, but we believe that step by step, we can reach it. Building during this Bear market means we will come out the other side ahead of new projects and ready to capture new investment and audiences. We have decided to approach the task from three different angles, web game, mobile game, and tokenomics. This is our first iteration and steps are subject to change. We will continue to update this Medium Article and release new articles on individual developments as they emerge.

Web game:

Our goal:

Create a nostalgic game world similar to Club Penguin Puffin.

Our Approach:

We are talking with developers to create a world where players can explore, communicate, and play minigames. Building the game using Unreal Engine is the best long-term solution and allows us to add more to the games in the future without the constraints of other engines.

Steps:

1. Use Wallet Connect to connect Algo wallet to the website
2. Create an API for the game to use from the data collected by the connection plugin
3. Determine which calls trigger which events
4. Create explorable world
5. Form back end API to insert NFT character

Mobile game:

Our goal:

Reach new customers and expose them to NFTs via the mobile gaming space.

Our Approach:

Our first mini-game will be a Puffin-themed glide and jump game on iOS. The game will be built in Unreal Engine, which also offers future integration with our web3 game.

Steps:

1. Create in-game mechanics and make sure gameplay is smooth
2. Integrate Puffin art, fonts, and graphic design
3. Wallet Connect, connect mobile app to the mobile Algo wallet
4. Integrate P2E mechanism

Tokenomics:

Our goal:

Create an economy for the game. Reward players for playing mini-games with tokens and allowing them to utilize it for governance proposals, in-game purchases, and farming for NFTs.

Our Approach:

We have already created and vetted a tokenomics model on Terra and Algorand with various community experts. On Algorand, the token will be an ASA.

Some core aspects that we wish to implement in our model:

1. Non-inflationary tokenomics with a fixed token supply of 98,730,000.
2. Longevity of the project: We want players 5–10 years down the line to still be able to earn tokens from playing mini-games.
3. Governance proposals, making the game community-driven.
4. In-game purchases such as early access to new regions
5. We want to create a ticket farming mechanism for people that hold LP positions. This will give LP stakers the tickets which are used to swap for NFTs with specific in-game utility.
6. Reward Puffin NFT holders through airdrops.

Plans for release

Game development takes time, and we are committed to bringing the community high-quality products.

We are currently two months into our development cycle, aiming to release our first mobile game in Q4 of 2022. Tokens will most likely be released post-game launch.

As far as we can tell, we are one of the only NFT projects working on a marketable mobile arcade game. We believe this will give us an edge in marketing and will help us bring thousands of new users to the Algorand ecosystem!
